At $45M, he finally stepped out of the day-to-day. Here is how.

Patrick built Allegheny Exteriors into four locations across western Pennsylvania. The hardest part of growing was not selling more. It was letting go.

Four locations, four ways of working

Patrick started Allegheny Exteriors in 2006 with one crew and a used truck. By 2023 it had four locations, roofing, siding, and windows, and about 180 people.

Each location had grown up with its own way of selling and running jobs. Patrick was the only person who could see across all four, and that meant he could never step away.

Why he switched

He wanted one playbook across every location: the same presentation, the same Good, Better, Best packages, and the same way of running a job from signing to final payment.

Now every rep presents from the same deck, every job runs on the same record, and the leadership team reads one set of reports across all four locations.

“I was the only person who could see all four locations. That meant I could never leave.”
Patrick Dunmore, Allegheny Exteriors

What changed at work

His location GMs run their operations with the same numbers Patrick sees. His COO runs the weekly meeting.

Patrick reviews the week on Monday and spends the rest of it on strategy, hiring, and the occasional ride-along because he misses it.

What changed at home

His son, Liam, plays youth hockey, and Patrick coaches the team. That means 6 a.m. ice times and weekend tournaments in Erie and Cleveland.

He says he did not grow the company to spend more time at the office. It took him eighteen years to act like it.
