How to get your contracting business recommended by ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and other AI assistants

Homeowners now ask AI assistants which roofer, plumber or HVAC company to call. Those answers are built from your listings, reviews, website and mentions elsewhere. Here is the practical playbook: where to be listed, what to publish, how reviews shape the answer, and how to test what AI says about you every month.

Quick answer

How do I get my contracting business recommended by ChatGPT and other AI assistants?

There is no form to submit and no ad to buy. AI assistants recommend contractors based on what the web says about them: verified listings on Google, Bing and Apple, recent reviews describing real jobs, a website with clear service and town pages, and mentions on trusted local and trade sites. Keep those consistent, then test the answers monthly.

A homeowner with a failed AC used to type "AC repair near me." More now ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI results a full question, like "Which HVAC company in Plano is honest about replacement versus repair?" and get back three or four names with a sentence on each. If you are not one of those names, you never get to compete.

Our local SEO guide for contractors covers the Google map pack and touches on AI search. This post goes deeper on the AI side: how assistants assemble an answer, where to be listed, what to publish so an assistant can quote you, how reviews become the words it uses, and a simple monthly test.

How do AI assistants decide which contractors to recommend?

When a homeowner asks a local question, the assistant usually runs web searches behind the scenes, reads the results, and writes a short answer with links. OpenAI's help page on ChatGPT search says it sometimes partners with other search providers, rewrites the question into targeted queries, and may share the user's general location to improve local results. It lists Bing among those providers. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on Google's own index and business data.

The assistant compresses what is already published, and compression exaggerates gaps. One stale phone number, or a website that never names your towns, can decide whether you are described or skipped.

Where does your business need to be listed for AI to find it?

Assistants cross-check. When your details agree across trusted sources, an assistant describes you with confidence. When they disagree, it may leave you out. Start with these profiles. Each is free to claim.

Why does a consistent name, address and phone number matter so much?

If one listing says "Smith Roofing LLC" with an old office line and another says "Smith Roofing and Gutters" with a cell number, an assistant has to guess whether they are the same company. Pick one trading name, one main phone number and one website address, and use them character for character on every listing, invoice, truck wrap and email signature. Keep your Google business name exactly as it appears in the real world, with no added keywords. Quarterly, search your name with old numbers and fix what turns up.

What should your website publish so AI can quote it?

Assistants favor pages that answer a question in plain words near the top. Treat every page as the answer to a question a homeowner would ask out loud.

Page types that give assistants something specific to quote.
PageQuestion it answersExample by trade
Service pageDo you do this, how, and what does it involve?Roofing: "Asphalt shingle replacement: tear-off, underlayment, flashing, ridge vent, cleanup, and the warranty you get."
Town pageDo you work in my town, and what do you know about homes here?HVAC: "Heat pump installs in Round Rock, where many 1990s homes have undersized return ducts."
Price range pageRoughly what will this cost, and what moves the price?Plumbing: "Tank water heater replacement falls in a stated range, with venting, permits and code upgrades as the main variables."
FAQ sectionThe ten questions your office answers on every call.Electrical: "Do I need a permit for a panel upgrade? Who pulls it? How long is power off?"
Page types that give assistants something specific to quote. Examples are illustrative. Use your own services, towns and job history.

Should you publish price ranges?

Homeowners ask assistants "How much does a new roof cost in Denver?" constantly. An honest range that explains what drives the price gives the assistant a quotable, local answer with your name attached. Set the range from your own job history, say what is included, name the main factors that move it, and date it. Say that a range is not a quote, and link to booking an estimate.

How do you write a town page that is not spam?

Google's spam policies describe doorway abuse, including many city-targeted pages that funnel visitors to one place. A real town page has what only you could write: the housing stock there, local permit quirks, common problems, photos of jobs in that town, and reviews from customers who live there. Build pages only where you have real work to show.

Does schema markup help you appear in AI answers?

Structured data helps machines read your facts, but it is not a shortcut. Google says no special schema is needed for its AI features. Two types still earn their place on a contractor site:

  • LocalBusiness (or a more specific type such as Plumber, Electrician, HVACBusiness or RoofingContractor) with your name, phone, URL, hours and service area. Google's LocalBusiness documentation lists the properties. Its rating markup is meant for sites that review other businesses, so do not mark up your own reviews as ratings.
  • FAQPage on pages with a visible FAQ. Be realistic: Google's FAQ documentation says FAQ rich results now show only for well-known government and health sites. The markup still labels your questions and answers clearly, and it must match what visitors see.

Can AI crawlers actually read your site?

OpenAI says that to be included in ChatGPT search, your site should allow its OAI-SearchBot crawler in robots.txt and accept traffic from its published IP addresses. Ask whoever manages your site to check, and keep key facts in real page text, not only inside images, PDFs or a chat widget.

How do reviews shape what AI says about your company?

When an assistant describes you, it often paraphrases the themes that repeat across your reviews. Forty recent reviews that mention on-time crews and clean job sites produce a sentence like "known for punctual crews and tidy work." Three reviews from 2022 produce nothing. BrightLocal found that 74% of consumers look for reviews from the last three months and 44% prioritize the last month, so review velocity matters as much as your star average.

Be careful how you ask. Google's Maps contribution policy lets businesses ask for genuine reviews, but not offer incentives, ask only happy customers, pressure people on the spot, or request specific content. You cannot script what customers write. You can ask every customer at the right moment, and do work worth describing.

  1. Ask every customer, not only the happy ones

Selectively asking satisfied customers breaks Google's policy. A consistent ask after every job also gives you a steadier, more believable flow.

  2. Ask while the job is fresh

Send the request the day the job is completed or the invoice is paid. Customers naturally mention the crew, the cleanup and the result when it just happened.

  3. Make it one tap

Text a direct link to your Google review form. Send some customers a Facebook, Yelp or Apple Maps link so your reviews are not all on one platform.

  4. Reply to every review in your own words

BrightLocal found 80% of consumers are likely to use businesses that respond to all reviews, and 50% are put off by templated replies. Mention the job and town when natural.

The timing habits in our follow-up texts guide apply here, and job photos taken for your records make real images for listings and town pages.

How do you test what AI says about your business every month?

AI answers change as sources change, so measure them. Build one fixed prompt list, run it on the same day each month, and log results in a spreadsheet. Name the town in each prompt, because assistants personalize local answers.

A starter prompt list. Swap in your trade, your towns and your core services.
IntentExample promptWhat to record
Best in town"Who are the best roofing companies in Frisco, Texas?"Are you named? Position in the list? Which sources are cited?
Urgent need"My water heater is leaking. Which plumber in Mesa can come today?"Named or not, and what it says about availability.
Specific service"Who installs heat pumps in Round Rock and has good reviews?"Does it know you offer that service in that town?
Trust question"Is [your company name] a good electrician? Any complaints?"Tone of the summary, wrong facts, which reviews it leans on.
Price question"How much does a bathroom remodel cost in Naperville?"Does it cite your price page or a directory?
A starter prompt list. Swap in your trade, your towns and your core services.
  1. Run the list in three assistants

Use ChatGPT, Google (AI Overviews or AI Mode where shown) and one more, such as Gemini, Claude or Copilot. Answers differ because sources differ.

  2. Record facts, not feelings

For each prompt: named or not, position, the exact description, any wrong detail, and every source the assistant cites.

  3. Trace each wrong answer to its source

An old phone number usually comes from a stale directory. Missing towns usually means no town page. A dated complaint usually means too few recent reviews.

  4. Fix the source, not the assistant

Correct the listing, publish the missing page, or ask for more reviews. Rerun the same prompts next month and compare.

Also track which leads actually came from AI. Add an AI assistant option to the "How did you hear about us?" question on your intake forms, and use our guide to marketing attribution for contractors to tie those leads to booked jobs. When an assistant keeps citing a lead-gen directory instead of you, our look at whether Angi is worth it explains that model, and the fix is usually a more specific page of your own.

Google's spam policies explicitly cover attempts to manipulate generative AI responses in Google Search, and sites that break them may rank lower or disappear.

  • Fake or bought reviews. The FTC's final rule on fake reviews bans buying or creating fake reviews, including AI-generated ones, and lets the agency seek civil penalties.
  • Review gating. Sending only happy customers to Google breaks Google's rule against selectively soliciting positive reviews.
  • AI spam pages. Google's guidance on generative AI content says generating many pages without adding value may violate its scaled content abuse policy.
  • Hidden text for bots. Showing crawlers different content than visitors see is cloaking.
  • Keyword-stuffed names and fake addresses. Both can get your Google profile suspended.
  • Claims you cannot back up. Certifications or warranties you do not hold will surface in summaries.

Can you use AI tools inside your business too?

Yes, with limits. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are good at drafting a service page from your notes or suggesting FAQ questions from call notes. They are unreliable on local facts, permit rules and prices. Treat their writing as a first draft that someone who knows the trade checks.

If you run Revcore on the Scale plan, you can connect your own AI assistant, such as Claude or another assistant that supports MCP (Model Context Protocol), to your Revcore account with a secure API key. The assistant can then look up clients, jobs, estimates and invoices, pull a revenue summary, and create leads, so you can ask questions about your business in plain language. That is the extent of it today: Revcore does not answer calls or write your marketing for you.

What matters most for AI visibility is the foundation: a website with real pages, lead capture that turns an AI referral into a booked estimate, and a fast reply when the lead arrives. Our speed to lead guide covers that step, because a recommendation only pays if you answer first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

Not in the way you pay for Google Ads. ChatGPT's recommendations come from search results and the sources it reads, and OpenAI says there is no way to guarantee top placement. Your best path is complete listings, recent reviews, clear website pages and allowing OpenAI's search crawler to read your site.

What is answer engine optimization for home service businesses?

Answer engine optimization means making your business easy for AI assistants to understand, trust and quote. For a contractor it is local SEO done carefully: consistent listings, steady reviews, pages that answer real homeowner questions with specifics, and monthly checks of what assistants say. Google says its AI features need no special optimization beyond good SEO.

Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing for local results?

OpenAI's help center says ChatGPT search sometimes partners with third-party search providers and lists Bing among them. It also uses its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, and may share a general location to improve local answers. Claim and verify Bing Places alongside your Google Business Profile so both have accurate details.

How long does it take to show up in AI answers?

There is no fixed timeline, and nobody can promise one. A corrected listing may show up sooner, while reviews and town pages build weight over months, not days. Run the same prompt list every month so you can see progress instead of guessing.

Do I need schema markup to appear in Google AI Overviews?

No. Google says there is no special schema needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. LocalBusiness markup is still worth adding because it states your name, phone, hours and service area clearly, and FAQPage markup can label a visible FAQ. Neither guarantees anything on its own.
