What hail does to a roof you cannot see from the yard
Hail rarely leaves holes. On shingles it leaves bruises: soft spots where granules are knocked loose and the mat underneath is cracked. From the ground the roof can look fine, but those spots age fast in Texas sun and begin to leak a year or two later. Wind does its own damage, lifting shingles and breaking the seal strip that holds them flat.
Our inspection looks at soft metals first, such as vents, gutters and flashing, because dents there show the size and direction of the hail. Then we check each slope, photograph damage with a chalk circle for scale and look at the attic for daylight or fresh staining.
How we work with your insurance adjuster
If the damage is real, we will tell you, and if it is not, we will tell you that too. When you file, your insurer sends an adjuster to inspect. With your permission we meet them on the roof, share our photos and measurements, and point out damage that is easy to miss, such as bruising on north slopes or dented ridge vents.
We are roofers, not public adjusters, and we do not negotiate your claim. Texas law prohibits contractors from waiving or rebating a deductible, and we never offer to. What we can do is make sure the scope of work matches the roof you actually have, then build it to that scope with our own crew.
What to do in the first 48 hours after a storm
Photograph hail on the ground with a coin or ruler for scale, and note the date and time. Walk around the house and take pictures of dented gutters, cars, patio furniture and window screens. If water is coming in, put a bucket down, move valuables and call us for an emergency tarp, which we document for your claim.
Be careful with anyone knocking on doors after a storm. Out-of-town crews follow hail through Texas every spring. Ask for a local office address, proof of insurance and a written report before you sign anything. Hartline has worked from Austin since 1998, and we will still be here when your warranty matters.
