Austin homes and the roofs they need
Austin's housing covers almost every era. Central neighborhoods like Hyde Park, Travis Heights and Tarrytown have 1930s to 1960s homes with low-slope additions, older decking and, sometimes, two or three layers of shingles. Allandale and Crestview are full of 1950s and 1960s ranch homes where ventilation is often an afterthought. Circle C Ranch and Mueller are newer, with builder-grade roofs now reaching 15 to 25 years.
Each needs a different approach. Older homes often need decking repair and better attic airflow, while newer ones usually need an upgrade from builder shingles to Class 4 impact-rated roofs before the next hailstorm.
Permits, historic districts and hail in Austin
The City of Austin generally requires a permit for a full roof replacement, and we pull it on every job. Homes in local historic districts, such as parts of Hyde Park and Travis Heights, may need historic review before changing materials or color, which adds a few weeks. We prepare that paperwork with photos and product sheets.
Austin sees hail most springs, with storms tracking in from the west across the hills. West-side neighborhoods such as Barton Hills and Northwest Hills also get strong wind on exposed ridges, so we fasten shingles to high-wind specifications as standard.
